Orogenic Legacy

As with several places along the Highland Boundary Fault, it's the extremities of the fault zone that have the most dramatic geology. Even if one were not actively looking out for it, the dramatic rock outcrops and obvious changes from sandstone in the south to psammite, semi-pelite and igneous dykes whilst approaching the Rocks of Solitude would suggest something significant had happened. Off the left of the frame, the River North Esk flows; this small gorge is cluttered with a complex jumble of moss-covered boulders, indicating the line of a smaller fault within the main Highland Boundary Fault.
